The role of the Indian Advisory Council is to assist its Indian Member Council in guiding the work of the Institute. The Council oversees the academic programmes and activities of the Institute. The term of Indian Advisory Council is for five years. The Ministry of Education(MoE) nominates four non-official members (Academics). It is chaired by the Secretary, Higher Education, Ministry of Education (MoE). The other official members are representatives from High Commission of Canada to India, Ministry of External Affairs and University Grants Commission.
The Indian Administrative Committee, however, was abolished and a new Finance and Audit Committee was created by the Council to look after the financial matters of the Institute.

The Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute is a non-profit organisation with registered charitable status in Canada. The Institute is funded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Government of Canada, the Canadian International Development Agency, and Private Donors in Canada. The operations in India Office are entirely funded by Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.
