SICI Partnership Seed Grant in Aid (SPSG in Aid) Program 2016-2017 (CLOSED)

 

Shastri Indo Canadian Institute (SICI) is pleased to invite applications from Canadian universities and other Canadian organizations including provincial and territorial governments to take benefit of its SPSG in Aid program, which provides partial matching financial contribution as well as logistical support for partner organizations’ programs and activities. Eligible partner organizations include all the current SICI member institutions, other educational institutions in Canada, provincial and territorial governments in Canada, as well as private or public companies operating in Canada.

The purpose of SPSG in Aid program is to support furthering bilateral exchanges, institutional linkages, as well as areas traditionally supported by SICI, including research and other academic collaborations between Canadian and Indian Institutions.

SPSG in Aid funds may be used to support bi-national seminars, conferences, workshops, meetings, scholarly discussions, planning meetings, student visits, faculty visits, delegation visits between India-Canada, etc., that initiate or further institutional linkages, academic mobility and trade relations between India and Canada.

Value : CAD$ 2,000/grant

This is a matching grant project. 50% of the budget to the limit of CAD$2,000/student and maximum 5 grants per institution.
SICI will additionally support the partner institutions with information and assistance related to networking logistics, identification of relevant partners and institutional contacts.

Contribution from Partner Institutions:

  • To receive 1:1 matching funds from SICI, applicants from a partner institution will be required to deposit funds with SICI. Please note, SICI will retain ~17% program admin fee from the total project budget. As an example a total project grant of $10,000 ($5,000-SICI + $5,000-Partner Institution), the partner institution will receive benefits worth CAD$ 8,300, and $1,700 will be retained by SICI as admin fee.
  • Projects with budgets requiring contribution below $5,000 or above $10,000 from SICI will be considered, if funding is available in this program.

Grant Administration:

  • A binational adjudication committee formed by SICI will adjudicate the grant applications.
  • The SPSG in Aid program will be managed by SICI like any other SICI managed programs.
  • When selected, the partner institution will require transferring their share of contribution to SICI accounts.

Total Funds available from SICI: CAD$ 30,000.

Number of Grants : 15 grants

Project Implementation Period: Between 15 December 2016 to 30 September 2017 (revised)

Eligibility

  • Any Canadian organizations willing and or working towards enhancing higher education cooperation between Canada and India.
  • For projects involving multi-sector collaborative activities with India, all expenses that are broadly aligned to educational and research collaboration will be eligible for funding under this grant program.
  • Preference will be given to SICI’s Canadian Council Member Institutions (please visit the link for a list of SICI’s member institutions: http://www.sici.org/about/members/)
  • SPSG in Aid project proposals could be built on any existing projects (i.e. continuation and or escalation of scope/size) or a new project.

  Application Requirements

  • A completed application form;
  • A summary description of the project (1,500-2,000 words) including goals, activities proposed, timeline, participants, involvement of business, government and civil society organizations (if any), dissemination strategy, and expected medium to long term contribution towards Canada-India collaborations;
  • Budget with breakdown of expenses and contributions by the partner institution/s and any other funding agencies (if applicable); Budget must also take into account 25% prime money available due to SICI’s financial contribution
  • Curriculum vitae of lead applicant and Indian partner (not more than 5 pages for each CV);

Evaluation Criteria 

SPSG in Aid Adjudicating committee will make the final decision concerning successful applicants based upon the following marking system:

1. Long-term partnership potential (20 points)

  • Will the SPSG in Aid project contribute to the development of institutional agreements or other long term partnerships?
  • Will the project build awareness of potential collaboration opportunities with other institutions outside of the two main applicants?

2. Soundness of the plan and potential for contributing to the Canada-India Governments’ strategic education goals (20 points)

  • Are the project objectives clear and easy to conceptualize in operational terms?
  • Do the objectives flow convincingly from analysis of the subject area of the proposal?
  • Is the methodology proposed appropriate for achieving the project’s objectives?
  • Do the project activities have potentials to contribute enhancing Canada-India education cooperation strategies and goals of the two governments?

3. Scholarship of the applicants (10 points)

  • Does the applicant/s have the necessary background and history of organizing similar projects to safeguard the success of the project?

4. Strength of partnership to be developed with non-academic world and soundness of dissemination strategy (5 points)

  • Does the project propose to partner and or interact with business, government or civil society organizations in order to maximize achieving its goals?
  • Do the proposed partnerships have long-term viability beyond the scope of the project?
  • Does the project propose any concrete strategy to disseminate results, outcomes and findings?

5. Budget (10 points)

  • Are the resources allocated in the budget realistic given the project’s planned activities?
  • Are the project’s budget lines conforming to SICI standard project expenses?

6. Timeline (5 points)

  • Is the project execution timeline well-structured and does it allot a realistic amount of time to achieve the project’s objectives and goals?

Acceptable Expenses

  • Travel and accommodation for speakers/participants (Travel expenses may either be for Canadians going to India or for Indians coming to Canada);
  • Meals;
  • Communication costs (audio, video conferencing, promotional materials);
  • Organizational support, translation, copying and printing;

Please note: Upon confirmation re receipt of a SICI SPSP in Aid grant, if requested by the recipient, eligible program expenses will be accepted with effect from 1st August 2016.

Disbursement of Funds

  • Upon signing of letter of agreement between SICI and partner institution, the partner institution will disburse their share of grant to SICI Canada office.
  • SICI Canada office will then release 75% of the total project grant to the recipient partner institution.
  • Remaining grant to be released upon submission and approval of the final report to SICI.
