Shastri Scholar Travel Subsidy Grants (SSTSG) 2024-25

The Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute (SICI) is delighted to announce the Call for Applications for the Shastri Scholar Travel Subsidy Grants (SSTSG) 2024-25. This program aims to enhance institutional and scholarly linkages between SICI's Canadian and Indian Member Institutions.

For the current fiscal year, the SSTSG Program is funded through the collaborative efforts of SICI and the Government of Saskatchewan's Ministry of Advanced Education under the Saskatchewan-Shastri Engaging Saskatchewan in India (SK-SESKI) Program, as one of the implementation initiatives from the recently renewed SICI-SK Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). A total of twelve SSTSG project grants are available. Notably, two of these grants are exclusively reserved for eligible applicants from academic institutions in Saskatchewan. These grants seek to promote cross-border academic exchange and collaboration between Saskatchewan post-secondary institutions and their Indian counterparts.

Key objectives:

  • Assist faculty members, post-doctoral and doctoral students with travel to participate in conferences, workshops, seminars and academic meetings in alternate partner countries (India or Canada);
  • Facilitate enhancing personal and professional growth of Indian and Canadian scholars and institutions.
  • Facilitate the promotion of academic linkages between India and Canada.

Value:

  • CAD$ 1,500 to support the scholar's international economy class round trip airfare between Canada-India).
  • Note: The SSTSG fund is to be released to the Recipient's institution upon completion of the SSTSG project and receipt of the final report.

Eligible Expenses:

  • International economy class round trip airfare between Canada-India;
  • Associated costs related to visas, meals, per diem and accommodation are not eligible

Number of Awards: Twelve (12)

  • Six (6) awards for students
  • Six (6) awards for faculty members

Eligible Travel Timeframe:

  • June 15, 2024 to March 31, 2025.

Eligible Institutions                                                     

  • Institutions may receive only one SSTSG award, student or faculty;

Eligible Applicants

  • Applicants from Canada must be Canadian citizens or hold a PR status in Canada. Similarly, applicants from India must be Indian citizens. 
  • Applicants must be full-time faculty members/researchers/students (doctoral and post-doctoral) of an eligible institution.
  • A student or faculty awarded an SSTSG in 2023-24 is not eligible until SSTSG in 2025-26.

Application Requirements

A complete application package should be a single PDF file with the SSTSG Application Form 2024-25 and the following sections in sequential order:

  1. Event Description: Provide a comprehensive event description outlining its objectives, topics/themes, expected scholarly inputs/outputs, intended contributions, and format. This should be detailed and span three (3).
  2. Scholar Profiles and Contributions: Include the participating scholars' detailed professional backgrounds and contributions. Highlight successful outputs and how the event will strengthen academic linkages. This should be covered in two (2) pages.
  3. Proof of Acceptance: Submit proof of acceptance of the paper/presentation from the organizing or host institution, along with a formal invitation letter.
  4. Curriculum Vitae of the applicant not more than three (3) pages.
  5. Curriculum Vitae of the academic host (for academic visit), not more than three (3) pages.
  6. Copy of a valid Passport/PR Card.
  7. Copy of original community certificate (for applicants from SC/ST/OBC category)

Evaluation Criteria

  1. Project/Institution/Event (6 points)
  • Does the proposed meeting/event carry significant weight regarding topics, objectives, scholarly inputs/outputs and rankings (based on the type of meeting/event, intended contributions/ accomplishments, scholarly presence, attending participants, etc.)? 
  1. Scholars' Professional Background  (5 points)
  • Does the applicant have the necessary scholarly background related to the project topic they propose executing?
  1. Contribution to faculty/student's development and potential institutional linkages (2+2=4 points)
  • How far is the proposed project likely to contribute to the applicant's development (personal and professional growth)?
  • How far will the proposed project contribute to potential institutional linkages between the applicant's home and host institutions?

Complete Application Package:  Email your complete electronic SSTSG application form along with all required documents to siciapp@ucalgary.ca with subject line: "SSTSG Application 2024-25" on or before August 4, 2024 (11:00 pm MDT).
