Course Description
Presently more than half of the world’s population lives in cities, and expected to double its size by 2050. These cities viewed as engines of growth, yet the pace and scale of urbanization brings challenges. However, this process can contribute to sustainable growth if managed well. Over the years, we have witnessed how cities play a crucial role in tackling climate change and seen to be at the forefront of managing epidemics such as COVID-19. Each city is unique, so are their experiences. However, the spatial dynamics of these diverse urban settings is yet to be emphasized in the policies and solutions adopted in several countries of the world. Transportation impacts urban life and policy issues linked with questions of sustainability, hence sustainable transportation becomes crucial to attainment of sustainable development. Against this backdrop, this course will help learners develop a holistic understanding of urban transportation and planning from the spatial perspective. Participants will learn core concepts necessary to comprehend the theoretical context and the recent advances in urban transportation studies. Lectures will cover major issues such as urban land use-transportation relation, urban mobility, impact of COVID-19 pandemic on urban transport and mobilities, transport externalities and the question of Sustainable Development Goals, Big data and urban transportation planning. In addition, the course will also familiarize learners with urban freight transportation and its management that has become critical in recent times. The course offers an engaging two-way learning platform where participants will also be given a chance to share their knowledge via a case study prepared by them. In addition, guest lecture(s) of experts from India and Canada will be organized to help participants gain from diverse perspectives. The extended knowledge on the topics of urban transportation, management and sustainable development expected to serve the diverse pursuits of students, researchers, academics, and interested stakeholders.
